The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has denied its 2012 post-election report is aimed at influencing the outcome of on-going election petition hearing at the Supreme Court.
In the report titled Ghana’s Elections and signed by its Commissioner, Lauretta Vivian Lamptey, CHRAJ stated that despite the irregularities, the 2012 elections were free, fair and reflected the will of voters.
In the report published December 12, 2012, the Commission said as part of its mandate to promote and protect the fundamental human rights and freedoms, it joined other civil society organisations in a broad effort to monitor the December polls to enhance the credibility and maintain peace and stability in the nation.
The Commission also said with the assistance of the Electoral Commission (EC) it trained and deployed 335 observers on the polling day, December 7 led by the Commissioner.
But emails from unknown groups have captured parts of the 2012 Ghana Elections report and circulating it to various media houses to give the impression that CHRAJ recently released the report to undermine the ongoing election petition hearing at the Supreme Court.
Deputy Commissioner of CHRAJ, Joseph Whittal, told Joy News he is surprised at attempts to suggest the report was released after the petitioners had filed their case in court.
He said CHRAJ “would want to stress that [the] report was filed as far back as the 10th of December 2012, two days after the election, and there is no attempt to influence what is happening at the Supreme Court”.
He indicated that the report was put together weeks before the New Patriotic Party (NPP) filed its suit at the Supreme Court challenging the declaration of John Mahama as President by the Electoral Commission (EC).
