Former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Joseph Osei-Owusu, has called for an overhaul of the Authority to weed out corrupt personnel.
This comes after similar accusation by Member of Parliament (MP) for Amenfi Central George Kofi Arthur. Mr Arthur claims applicants willing to pay more are able to secure driver’s license without going through the laid down procedure.
The MP stated: “Now if you want a driving license, you will pay GHS 450, and [DVLA] gives you one week and you get it. But if you want to go through the formal process…it can take you about three months”.
Mr. Osei-Owusu who is also the Member of Parliament for Bekwai believes strict monitoring and commitment to a performance charter by the workers can restore trust and confidence in the system.
He admits that during his time as DVLA boss, there were reports of accounting officers not attending to customers unless their palms have been greased.
Last week when the MP for Amenfi Central raised the issue, Deputy Minority Leader in Parliament, Dominic Nitiwul, refuted them since there was no proof.
But the former DVLA CEO indicated the introduction of a performance charter will serve as proof, if staff are corrupt, negligent or non-performing.
