Ghana has yet again been recognised for working hard to reduce hunger and undernourishment, from a prevalence of 40.5% in 1990-92 to less than 5% in 2010-2012. Ghana has therefore achieved the Millennium Development Goal One.The number of undernourished people in the country has also been reduced from 6.16 million people in 1990-92 to less than 2 million in 2010-12, achieving the rather ambitious World Food Summit target.At a special event held at the FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, Ghana's progress was celebrated with an award for notable and outstanding progress in flighting hunger.Ghana was one of only eighteen countries in the world, and one out of only two that came from Africa to win the prestigious award.The reduction in the prevalence of hunger and undernourishment is based on the Food & Agriculture Organisation's (FAO) most recent estimates.Minister for Food & Agriculture Clement Kofi Humado received the award on behalf of President John Mahama at the Rome event. He was accompanied by three Best Farmers.Mr. Humado in his acknowledgement, attributed the progress made to the country's hardworking farmers and fishers. He also pledged the country's continued effort to eradicate hunger and undernourishment from the remaining pockets mainly in Northern and the Southern Savannah areas of the country.
