A school for intellectually disabled persons, New Horizon , is seeking government support and a speech therapist to help run the school.
The school provides basic education on an individual basis for children aged 4 -16 years.
Sheltered Vocational Workshops give training and employment in vocational and daily living skills to those who are older.
140 children, teenagers and adults currently attend the school.
But the school is faced with lots of challenges including their inability to pay teachers their salaries.
Principal of the school Mrs. Vanessa Adu Akosah says government could offer to pay their teachers.
Speaking at the school’s annual fun games day, she also said there was an urgent need for a speech therapist.
“There are only five speech therapists in Ghana, so it tells you how much they will be asking for”, she explained.
The school has a physiotherapist but their biggest challenge was a speech therapist – needed by 67% of their pupils, the Principal revealed.
She says the school runs on donations.
According to the school's website, it is registered with the Ministry of Education, and has been legally registered as a voluntary, non-profit making organisation.
It is managed by an Executive Director and controlled by a Board of Governors.
Meanwhile, as part of their corporate social responsibility, Fidelity Bank is helping to cater for the needs of some of the students by offering them scholarships.
Kojo Ofori Yeboah, the Brand Communications Manager of Fidelity says the company has a program, Adopt A Child that provides some funds and material support to run the school.
