The Ghana Revenue Authority has closed down Hwantian Deli Ghana limited, a mattress producing company operated by Chinese nationals, behind the Dome Market, in the Achimota area.
Investigations by the GRA revealed the company since 2012 has greatly undervalued their imports and sold goods at various parts of the country without charging tax.
Assistant Commissioner of Debt Management and Compliance, Maxwell Tsatsu said the high rate of non-compliance has placed the country’s revenue at risk.
The company which operates in an old ware house behind the Dome market close to Achimota is said to have been importing some chemicals for the production of mattress since November 2012.
The owner of the company is presently out of the country and the other nationals have no permit to operate or stay in the country.
GRA revealed that electricity connection to the premises of the company is illegal. During the crackdown inspection of the site, the Authority also discovered, there is poor ventilation exposing workers to serious health hazards.
Some employees too have complained that they have not been paid for some time and have appealed that the company should pay them.
Meanwhile, 22 quarry companies have also come to the notice of the Ghana Revenue Authority and according to the Assistant Commissioner; action would soon be taken against these tax defaulting companies.
The Hwantian Deli Ghana Limited will remain closed until further notice.
