Former CEO of the Commonwealth Telecommunication Organization, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah is advocating for the teaching of leadership skills to students.
Currently, the President of Dominion University, Dr. Spio-Garbrah says he recognizes the importance of leadership in the community, which is a necessary tool to drive development.
Speaking on PM:Express Personality Friday on Multi TV, he said “We need good leaders in all aspects of our society. We need them in the media. We need them in the universities. We need them in the churches. We need them in the world of business,” Garbrah said.
Born in 1953, Dr. Garbrah is a businessman, diplomat and politician; and has held several high profile positions. He served as Minister of Education, and Minister responsible for Mines and Energy under the Jerry Rawlings administration between 1994 to 2000. He was one-time Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States.
He developed the idea of African Building Centre for Developing Education (ABCDE,) a movement to get professionals back into the classroom.
The purpose of the program, he told Host Nana Ansah Kwaw, is for students to gain insight into the professional world by connecting themselves with professionals in various fields of work such as dentistry and architecture.
ABCDE aims to empower students by providing them with connections to professionals who share their life experiences.
“I am trying to attract students to come and study and achieve their life ambitions, Garbrah said.
Having grown up in Kumasi, son of a school teacher, headmaster and midwife, Garbrah was raised to speak the truth, practice tolerance, and accept criticism. Raised a Christian, he grew up “comfortable but not rich”.
As President of Dominion University College and CEO of Action Chapel International of Ghana, Dr. Spio-Garbrah spoke of his dedication to the people stating:“I am a public servant at heart . . . my mindset is that of a public servant, someone who will serve people.”
About his role in the Action Chapel International, he said, his foremost purpose is to spread the word of God. The organization is looking to expand, and with this international growth it strives to continue to spread the word of Christ while “bringing more souls to Christ.”
Ekwow Spio-Garbrah was appointed CEO of the Christian Action Faith Ministries International in 2011, making him the first person to occupy such a role in a Christian denomination in Ghana.
