Girls’ enrollment in four schools in the Nanumba North District in the Northern Region has seen an astronomical increase following an intervention by Action Aid Ghana. The intervention sought to promote the enrollment and retention of girls in school until they complete, and it is being implemented in Massaka, Alurani, Juo and Nasamba in the Nanumba North and South District in the Northern Region. Available statistics at the Nasamba primary school indicate that the number of girls enrolled since 2008 outnumbers the number of boys which is not the norm especially in most communities in northern Ghana. In the 2008/2009 academic year, the number of girls was 195 against 182 boys, but in 2009/2010 the number of girls increased to 219 with the number of boys marginally increasing to 211. In the 2012/2013 the number of girls further increased to 234 against 227 boys. The increment has been attributed to the formation of girl clubs in the schools by Action Aid Ghana. This was made known in an interview with Joy News’ Martina Bugri in Nasamba in the Nanumba South district in the Northern region. A Teacher and a Girl’s Club Mentor Musah Rukaya said before the intervention by Action Aid Ghana, the girls were not performing well in class but since the introduction of the girls club the girls’ performances have improved, same as enrolment. She said the girls attend regional and national girl camps where they learn a lot and are also exposed to experiences from other schools, adding that is one of the motivating factors that keep a lot of the girls in school. Madam Rukaya added that at the girls club the girls are educated on human rights, moral issues and are encouraged to learn during sessions at the club. She said it is one of the interventions by Action Aid Ghana that has help in the education sector in the area.
