With recent claims by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the economy of the nation was in tatters with upsurge in levels of unemployed graduates, there are now calls on government to look for alternative plans to occupy these graduates.
The Coordinator for the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET) George Ferguson Laing says, his COTVET can effectively bridge that gap in the Ghanaian economy.
He believes, the unemployment situation in Ghana would be alleviated if the various stakeholders in the Technical and Vocational Industry including parents and government sustained their collaboration.

Speaking on the morning show on JOYNEWS, George Laing said that the aim of COTVET was to upgrade Technical and Vocational training to make it more attractive.
To ensure the realization of these aims, it had put in place various measures such as the establishment of the skills development fund and the competency based training program which is to help businesses and service providers improve upon the skills of the workers to expand the economy and bridge the gap between industry and training institutions.
This time, instead of the student undertaking an attachment which was not properly monitored, in the Competency based training program, the training institution would sign a memorandum of understanding which would outline exactly what the student is expected to achieve at the end of the training session.
This measure is to prevent institutions from seeing the students as being in their way and sending them on errands instead of giving them practical experience. This is currently being implemented on pilot basis at the Accra Polytechnic and Accra Technical Training Center (ATTC).
Although COTVET is doing its utmost best to revamp the vocational and technical training education in Ghana, George Ferguson Laing insists that they are still faced with the absence of the relevant equipment to use for the practical education of the students in their schools as they had inadequate finance.
