Residents of Kumasi have refused to use the oldest footbridge in the city, especially in the evening, because of fear of attack by criminals on the bridge. The criminals are said to be using an abandoned Railway station close to the bridge as a haven from where they come out at night to carry out their nefarious activities on passers-by on the footbridge. At night, bandits attack and rob pedestrians who use the footbridge hence most pedestrians are afraid to use it. Also, footbridges constructed over the drains passing through Atonsu S-line, Aboabo and Ahensan Estate, are being used as platforms to dump refuse into the drains. Some pedestrians said they preferred using the railway lanes instead of the footbridge because it is faster and the bridge is too tall. This month as Joy News focuses on the state of footbridges across the country,Luv FM's Erastus Asare Donkor reported that most of the footbridges in Kumasi are not serving their purpose. Another footbridge opposite the Kumasi Central Market is nearing completion. The contractors estimate it is 95% complete. Even though the construction of the footbridge started about two years ago by an Italian construction company, it is yet to be open for public use. Provisions have been made for the disabled hence when it opens to the general public, it would serve their peculiar needs. The Ashanti regional Urban Roads Director, Mr. Theodore Quaye, told Luv FM that there are plans to open the bridge to the public. According to him, he has spoken to the Kumasi Mayor about it, and the bridge would soon be open. Although it is not yet clear whether pedestrians will use this footbridge, when it opens, but it will aid market women and traders to easily access the Central Market from the Central District of Adum.
