The Ghana Education Service (GES) is asking politicians and other influential leaders in society to desist from interfering in the process of posting newly trained teachers. Ashanti Regional Director, Kofi Sarfo Kantanka, says attempts by some high-profile personalities to stall posting of some teachers to rural Ghana is worrying. He was opening the annual regional management meeting in Kumasi. It is a policy of the GES that newly- trained teachers serve in the rural areas, at least, for two years. This is meant to address the uneven distribution of teachers, which put deprived communities of the country at a disadvantage. Implementation of the policy is however being frustrated, according to authorities, by people in high positions. Most often, teachers posted to rural areas manage to change their duty posts due to such interference. Mr. Kantanka emphasized that trained teachers must be compelled to serve anywhere in the country. “It is a disincentive for teachers who have been in the system for so many years to remain forgotten in the rural areas whiles others who come later are posted to the cities. So we do what we call the rotational postings where newly trained teachers are put in the rural areas and bring them to the cities as and when there are new entrants” he explained. The GES Regional Director told Luv News the interferences undermined operations and must be stopped. “These people should also see reason with us and understand us to enable us implement this policy effectively to ensure equity in this area”, he pleaded.
