The Paramount Chief of Alavanyo, Togbega Tsedze Atakora is calling on government to relax the dawn to dusk curfew imposed on the community. The chief says the curfew is having a toll on the economic activities of residents in the area, especially farmers who are unable to produce more crops. The curfew was imposed on the Alavanyo and Nkonya communities after several discussions with authorities there on how to resolve the protracted violence in the area. However, Togbega Tsedze Atakora told Joy News calm has been restored in the area so residents must be allowed to go about their normal activities. He said the curfew is having a terrible toll on the activities of the residents. According to him, residents who are predominantly farmers, usually leave home at dawn and return very late after work but the curfew has disrupted the activities. "Whether you have finished with the work of the day or not you must set off to the house," he said, a situation which is greatly affecting livelihoods, he added. Togbega Tsedze Atakora also called for the building of a police station in Alavanyo to ensure law and order at all times. In a response, the Volta Region Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo said the government is considering several options available to put up a police station in Alavanyo. According to him, there is the option of a 40 footer container as an improvised police station structure for use by police officers. On the issue of the relaxation of the curfew, the minister said they are carefully monitoring the security situation and will take the necessary action. He said for now they have no option but to maintain the curfew until everybody agrees that there is peace.
