A group calling itself progressive youth of Upper East says they are angry about abandoned factories in the region and will be demonstrating if a one-week ultimatum to address their concerns elapse. Secretary to the group Latif Solomon says they are unhappy and are demanding an explanation for the abandoned factories especially when lack of jobs is forcing young men and women to migrate to Accra. The abandoned factories are Meat Processing factory at Bolgatanga, the Northern Star Tomato Processing Factory, at Pwalugu which has been closed down due to lack of raw materials and a rice factory. A farmer who spoke to Joy News Upper East regional correspondent Albert Sory said although the machines can function, they are yet to see any product from the company. Sory also reported that the environment of the Tomato processing factory have also become bushy. The factories which were established in the 60s by Ghana's first president Kwame Nkrumah as part of his seven-year development plan have been left to rot by successive governments, despite several promises. In view of the deplorable state of these factories, the youths are angry and are bent on organizing “a massive” demonstration. Latif Solomon, revealed that this is the second time they have planned to demonstrate. The first was postponed because the police explained that the ongoing Election Petition hearing at the Supreme Court made it inconvenient. He said with the hearing petering out, they have renewed their desire to demonstrate. Latif Solomon said government has an ultimatum of one week to respond to their concerns. But in a response, the Upper East regional minister Alhaji Limuna Mohammed Muniru speaking on Joy FM’s Newsnight confessed that he had not visited those factories since he resumed office. He pledged to do so at the end of the month.He said people should give him the benefit of the doubt because he just assumed office. Nonetheless, the regional minister says creating jobs is one of his Key Performance Index and that is why he was in touch with some officials at SADA to do a business proposal for investors. He revealed that some investors from India are interested in a Public- private partnership for one of the factories. He says he was surprised by the action of the supposed youth group because they could verify the state of affairs from his outfit.
