A GH¢45,000.00 Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound to provide quality health care to the people of Abira, a farming community in the Atwima-Nwabiagya District, has been inaugurated amidst fanfare. The compound has facilities for a ward, theatre and offices for the resident midwife and medical assistant. The project was a joint initiative of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)-School of Medical Science (SMS) and the Utah University’s School of Public Health in the United States (US). Mr. Daniel Ansong, Senior Lecturer and Deputy Director of Research and Development Unit, KNUST, said there was no doubt that bringing quality health care services closer to the people was the way to keep people healthy and productive. He said the findings of a study carried out by the three institutions in the community showed that many were dying because of inaccessibility to a health facility, hence the need to provide the CHPS compound. Mr. Rick Gaskins, leader of the Utah University team, said they were proud to be associated with efforts at improving health care delivery in the area. Dr Osei Somuah, the District Director of Health, hailed the project and said it would provide relief to especially pregnant women. The District Chief Executive (DCE), Nana Asare Bediako thanked the institutions for the support and urged the people to show ownership of the project by making sure that it was properly maintained. The Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Mr Benito Owusu-Bio, donated GH¢4,000.00 in support of the running of the Abira CHPS compound and another at Worapong in the district. Nana Yeboah Asiamah, the chief of the traditional area, used the occasion to appeal to the district assembly to renovate the local basic school, which he said, was in bad state.
