Former President John Agyekum Kufuor is leading a 250-man Observer Mission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for Bamako, Mali to observe elections in that country. A statement signed by Mr Frank Agyekum, Spokesperson for the Office of the former President, said the delegation comprised representatives from ECOWAS member states, electoral commissions, the ECOWAS Parliament, civil society, ECOWAS Council of the Wise, ECOWAS Court of Justice, and ECOWAS Ambassadors. It said about seven million voters would be voting on July 28, 2013 in Mali after going through a biometric registration process and were issued with voter’s ID cards with national identification numbers. The landmark election on 28th July 2013 was deferred from April 2012 after the overthrow of the government of President Amadou Toumani Touré by insurgents from the north of the country. It is being held six months after international forces drove away the insurgents and restored peace. The statement said Mr Kufuor would leave Bamako for Kampala, Uganda, where he would address a lecture to serve as the high point in the year-long celebration of activities marking the 90th anniversary of the Makerere University, one of Africa’s oldest universities. The former President would speak on the theme: “Oil resource Management and Utilization for Economic Transformation – The Case of Ghana.” The statement said he would be away for ten days.
