Adansi South Member of Parliament, KT Hammond, is threatening court action against the Herald Newspaper for publishing what he calls false information about him. The paper in an August 5, 2013 publication, alleged that the MP, who is also a former deputy Minister of Energy was owing the Electricity Company of Ghana in excess of 30,000 Ghana cedis. The paper claimed the residence of Mr. Hammond had been connected illegally to the national grid. Officials of ECG have described the report as untrue and misleading. The area manager of ECG Dominic Afedzi told Citi FM, Hammond reported about a faulty meter and requested for it to be changed. He said after the replacement, his actual consumption was revealed as 4,200 cedis out of which he paid 3,000 cedis with 1,200 cedis remaining. He found it intriguing that the newspaper came up with a 30,000 cedi debt owed by KT Hammond as contained in its publication. The news paper editor Larry Dogbe admitted they erred in their report and was ready to apologise. He was appalled, however, at the ECG officials for fixing a post paid meter in the residence when the company has begun fixing pre-paid meters in the homes of private citizens. He alleged that when officials of ECG went to fix a new meter the MP verbally assaulted the staff and drove them away from the house. In a reaction, KT Hammond said the report was a fabrication meant to silence him for championing the rot at the Energy sector over the past week. He told Citi FM he realised there was a problem with his meter and took the initiative on his own to inform the ECG about it. Subsequently the meter was changed. "If somebody takes the view that because I have talked about energy I should be silenced by this sort of ridiculous allegations then so be it. "There is no truth; not a single atom of truth in it. Don't I have brains in my head? I would have thought that for whatever it is worth somebody will credit me with some modicum of brains." He also dismissed the allegations that he subjected the ECG officials to insults. He said "God forbid" that he who is "fasting" will insult ECG officials who are doing their jobs. He said he was once a deputy Energy Minister and supervised the ECG at some point. He will not be in his right senses to insult officials of ECG when they come to his house to work. KT Hammond said he had spoken to his lawyers and the Herald newspaper will hear from them.
