Female pupils of Junior Secondary Schools in the Wa Municipality have been coached on the benefits to be derived from pursuing technical education programmes. The event, held at Wa on Tuesday, took the form of a forum at which young female technicians were invited to share their experiences with the pupils and educate them on the advantages of technical courses.Mrs. Grace Otu-Boateng, the National Coordinator for Women in Technical Education and Training, organized it as part of her visit to the municipality.Three women were invited to interact with the girls and to serve as role models. They were Miss Mieri Gaapie, who works with the Wa Municipal Assembly as the Foreman in-charge of carpentry and joinery, Miss Monica Dery, an HND in Building Technologist on national service with the University of Development Studies and Miss Florence Abora, a plumber with the Ghana Prisons Service. They advised the pupils not to consider any subject as being a preserve for men because society was replete with women who had excelled in areas that people thought were preserved for men.As girls, they said, people would discourage them when they begin such programmes but in the end they would be better off if they remained unruffled and focus on their ambition.Mrs. Otu-Boateng said there were several opportunities opened to girls who pursued technical education and they should not be afraid to undertake such courses.Source: GNA
