The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Nayon Bilijo, says his outfit will soon investigate corruption allegations against the National Premix Committee.
This follows calls by fishermen in Jamestown for thorough investigations into the management of premix fuel in the country on grounds of corruption.
The fishermen have accused members on the Committee of allegedly misusing moneys allocated for development of the industry. They are also alleging that the incompetence of the Committee is the reason for the challenges faced by the industry.
"We are calling for a thorough investigation into the way the premix is managed and all loopholes through which money pass into private pockets sealed", says Executive Secretary of the Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council, Nii Abio Kyerekuanda IV.
Nii Abio Kyerekuanda IV believes findings from such an investigation would save the government a lot of money.
However, Mr Bilijo told Joy News "I am seeking approval [from Cabinet] for re-organisation of the National Premix Committee and that will be done shortly."
He also added that his Ministry had established a Fisheries Enforcement Unit which will soon arrest fishermen who engage in bad fishing practices.
The Unit, according to the Minister "will comprise personnel from the Ghana Navy, the Ghana Air Force, Marine Police...and personnel from the Fisheries Ministry."
