The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSSAG) has said it will embark on strike from the 27th August 2013 – two days from an expected Supreme Court ruling on an election petition that has immense impact on Ghana’s politics.
JUSSAG’s Francis Brakwah says they want to make sure the strike has maximum impact.
The threat of strike comes as the Supreme Court is set to give a crucial ruling on 29th August 2013 an the Election Petition brought before it by key figures in the opposition NPP. The Petitioners are challenging the legitimacy of a declaration of NDC’s John Mahama as winner of last December’s presidential polls.
As the nation awaits the ruling, judicial service workers who are responsible for administrative work of the courts, have announced once again that will be withdrawing all their services.
This is the second strike JUSSAG intends to embark upon after judicial workers partially withdrew their service in April 8 this year – just about the beginning of the hearing of the election petition. They grudgingly returned to work because of the importance of the Election Petition.
But not this time; “We cannot wait anymore. This time we are not going to give any space. Whatever actions we are going to embark on will affect the Supreme Court” President of the Judicial Service Staff Association Francis Brakwah tells Joy News.
He said since they called off their strike over unpaid allowances, government has not been “alive to its responsibilities towards workers”. He is therefore accusing government of abusing the trust of judicial workers.
Minister for Information and Media Relations, Hassan Ayariga is however appealing to the workers to resort to dialogue to resolve any grievances.
