Government and parties involved in the 2012 election petition has appealed to workers of the Judicial Service to call off a planned nationwide strike which is set to begin on August 27 - two days before the Court delivers its judgement.
The timing of the industrial action, according to the Minister of Information and Media Relations Mahama Ayariga, does not create a fair environment to negotiate their grievances, stressing the need for the workers to rescind their decision.
The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSSAG) announced on Tuesday August 20 to embark on strike due to what they call an abuse of trust by government for failing to pay allowances that have been outstanding for more than a year.
But the Minister was hopeful the impending strike will not affect the judgement on August 29.
"From my appreciation of the way the Chief Justice works that if the Supreme Court wants to deliver its judgement on the 29, they could be able to do that unless the judges themselves too go on strike", said Mr Ayariga.
A member of the petitioners’ legal team, Frank Davis, told Joy News the workers must be guided by the larger national interest before going on the intended strike.
He called on the JUSSAG leadership to allow clerks and officers to work on the day the Supreme Court will announce its judgement on the petition.
"That would not mean that they have gone against the strike action or the protestation they are involved in", he told JUSSAG.
