The Sekyere Afram Plains district in the Ashanti region has ordered a one-day ban on the sale of alcoholic drinks ahead of the Supreme Court ruling on the Presidential Election Petition on Thursday August 29. The decision was reached after the security committee of the Assembly met with political party leaders, chiefs and other stakeholders in the area. District Chief Executive, Fuseini Donkor disclosed this to Luv FM, as part of measures to ensure peace in the area. As the judgement day on the election petition draws near, Ghanaians have been sensitised to accept the final verdict of the court for national cohesion. Civil society groups and political parties including the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) involved in the case have announced measures put in place to ensure there is peace after the ruling. Fuseini Donkor explained that the decision to ban the sale of alcohol especially in the capital, Drobonso, which is a flash-point, is to prevent any violence. According to him, most of the young people in the area hide weapons on them and forment trouble under the influence of alcohol and so the ban is necessary. "Out of ten young guys in Drobonso, about eight will have either knives or blades on them [therefore] in order to prevent any accidents, we have decided to ban all drinking spots from operating" he observed. Fuseini Donkor stated that the drinking spots can operate on Friday August 30 after the Supreme Court ruling.
