The Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) has joined in the clarion call for peace and stability after the Supreme Court verdict on the 2012 election petition on August 29. It is, therefore, essential on all including Christians and Muslims to realise that the verdict would provide another opportunity “to deepen our belief in co-existence and our acknowledge of hospitality towards the progress of this nation,” Mr Solomon Kotei, General Secretary of the ICU, said. In an interview with the Ghana News Agency at the weekend, Mr Kotei said: “The peace we are fostering today is to bring tolerance, civility and decorum to everyone”. He said it was true that Ghana had chosen the path to democratic governance which was expensive and that demanded that everyone worked hard to make democracy thrive. Mr Kotei said: “Whichever way the judgement will go, it is certain that the winner will celebrate and the vanquished will not be happy but it all needs tolerance. “The consequence of disturbance is what is worrying us as working people in Ghana which will worsen the unemployment situation we are experiencing now”. Mr Kotei said the rate of unemployment was worrying and if there should be any disturbance where offices, factories and homes would be burnt as seen in the case of Sierra Leone, Liberia and Rwanda, rebuilding would be very expensive. He said ICU would not wish any Ghanaian to be a refugee and called on all to bury their differences for peace to prevail. Mr Kotei said workers, in particular, should ensure that peace prevailed in their various workplaces and communities to ensure high productivity.
