Officials of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital have indicated they will punish persons found culpable of Monday's fire which gutted the records section of the hospital’s Diabetic Centre. Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Mustapha Salifu, told Joy News the hospital is awaiting official report on the cause of the fire from its Environmental Department, to establish persons whose actions caused the fire. The fire which started after 4am destroyed about one-third of over 5,000 records of patients, Mr. Salifu revealed. The paper files in the Diabetic Center building caught fire from burning logs placed directly behind the windows of the building. Mustapha Salifu explained that in a bid to expand water supply to the Diabetic Center, the department felled some trees to make space for the placement of large water tanks. He said logs of the felled trees were deliberately set on fire to expedite the wood clearing process, however, it appears the laborer tasked with controlling the burning of the trees failed in his responsibilities. The fire which caught the mosquito netting of the window close to the burning logs spread to other parts of the building and destroyed files containing patient's records. But Mustapha Salifu said the data of patients whose records have been consumed by the fire are not lost because the hospital had previously started a process of transferring all records of patients onto a central computer. He said after reviewing an official report from the Environmental Department of the hospital, those whose actions led to the fire would be punished.
