The National Peace Council is asking individuals and organisations to marshal efforts to consolidate the prevailing peaceful atmosphere in the country. This, they say, would facilitate smooth formulation and implementation of policies and programmes to address challenges confronting the nation. The Council has in this direction implored all Ghanaians to refrain from making utterances, statements and engaging in acts that are likely to create tension and threaten national peace. Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante, Chairman of the Council who said this in a news briefing Tuesday, enjoined the media not to engage in discussions and programmes likely to cause divisiveness.Prof Asante noted that it was unjustifiable for anyone to attack the integrity of the judges who heard the 2012 presidential election petition as has been the case since the judges delivered their judgement on the case.He said such attacks would be inimical to the maintenance of national peace and cohesion, adding: “Ghana is more than the Supreme Court verdict, let us beat peace drums and not war drums.”The Council, therefore, appealed to the political parties and media houses to respect institutions mandated to ensure democratic governance and rule of law.Rev. Asante said the Council would continue to work with national institutions, political parties, civil society organisations and the media to make sure Ghana remains a model of peace and democratic governance in the continent.
