The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development says he has initiated steps to collaborate with the National Service Secretariat to use Service personnel in street naming and addressing projects across the country.
The Deputy Minister, Mr Baba Jamal, said the use of Service personnel in the exercise has been necessitated by complains from Town Planners regarding a lack of personnel to facilitate the project.
The street naming and addressing system was launched by President Mahama in May this year, and it is expected to be completed by the middle of next year, but not much progress has been made.
Speaking at an orientation programme with Town and Country Planners as well as District and Municipal Chief Executives in the Central Region on Tuesday, the Deputy Minister said the Service personnel would be given thorough training to ensure their effectiveness.
"We are going to post service personnel from [various universities] to augment [town planners in] all the districts", said Mr Jamal.
He underscored the need to increase the number of Town and Country Planners in every district to ensure that the 2014 deadline for the project is achieved.
He said it was important to have at least one Town and Country Planner in every district to oversee the project.
The Minister also presented equipment to kick start the project in the Central Region.
