Ghana's National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) continues to host partners and collaborators from the Sub Region and the latest high profile delegation is from Nigeria, this year.
Top management of the Nigerian Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) embarked on a three day working visit to Ghana from March 2nd to 5th.
The Nigerian NHIS Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Professor Mohammed Nasir Sambo led the delegation to the NHIA Head Office, Accra, purposely to study Ghana’s Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Their engagements were to afford them the opportunity to learn from Ghana’s NHIS experience which is touted as a shining example in the Sub Region.
In her introductory remarks, the NHIA Chief Executive, Dr Lydia Dsane-Selby said the NHIS remained Ghana's lead vehicle to attaining Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
According to her, the NHIS is making tremendous successes in rural areas which pegs the Scheme’s coverage in Northern Ghana at 55%, so far.Dr. Lydia Dsane-Selby called for a designed system and more sustainable funding sources for the benefit of all in the Sub Region.
Professor Mohammed Nasir Sambo explained that the visit was to deepen the partnership and successful cooperation with the NHIA. “There is not perfection in health insurance. We are here to learn from the Ghanaian magic.
We need a comprehensive ICT platform to integrate all major stakeholders in the health sector. “The Nigerian NHIS CEO advocated the need to put in place a framework to enhance transparency and accountability.
Directors from the NHIA's various Directorates including Ben Kusi, Director for Membership and Regional Operations (MRO) and Ismail Osei, Acting Director for Quality Assurance, a Deputy Director for Provider Payments made presentations on topics relating to their directorates.
Other presenters were; Ruby Aileen Mensah, Deputy Director for Provider Payments and Manager for Research, Policy, Monitoring and Evaluation, Rosemary Bimpomaah Mensah-Anobah.
The delegation intended visiting the Dodowa NHIS District Office, Ayawaso District Office, Shai Osudoku Government Hospital (Dodowa), Greater Accra Claims Processing Centre (CPC) and the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
