District Chief Executives in the Ashanti Region have up to the end of this month to present their action plans on dealing with sanitation in their various districts. Regional Minister Eric Opoku says those who fail to meet the September eding deadline risk severe sanctions. He is insisting the action plan must contain strategies the assemblies have in dealing with sanitation together with specific timelines. According to him, a strategy employed by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly in dealing with sanitation had proved successful enough, to be replicated throughout the region. The Kumasi Mayor, Kojo Bonsu instituted a night-cleaning exercise almost four months ago in the Central Business District of Adum and other business areas. These areas which had been overflowing with filth and waste after close of work, is now clean by 6:00am the following morning because sanitation workers use the evening to clean up the business district. The Ashanti Regional minister said the pilot initiative of the KMA shows that dealing with the menace of waste and filth was an achievable goal. Eric Opoku told Seth Kwame Boateng of JOYNEWS, he is bent on implementing to the letter, a Presidential directive to all regional ministers to drastically deal with sanitation in their regions and will not accept any excuses. The minister said out of the 30 assemblies, 25 have so far submitted action plans. "We have given them up to September....if there is a particular Chief Executive who cannot help us actualise the dream of the His Excellency the President, then why should he be there?."
