The National Drivers’ Academy (NDA), who is mandated to provide refresher course to all drivers in the country, has begun a nationwide programme for all Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) bus drivers. Explaining the course content to the media, the Executive Director of NDA Mr. Etse Ladzekpo, who doubles as the Lead Trainer of the course, said all MMTL bus drivers will be trained in "driving skills and risks, hazard perception, vehicle, passenger security and customer care, and road traffic regulations." He said it was important for other commercial transport operators to take driver refresher courses to enhance their professional conduct and stem the "incessant and needless road deaths and injuries on Ghana’s roads”. The theme of the training programme is, “Drive with your mind, not just with your hands and feet”. At the commencement of the programme, Mr Noble John Appiah, the Managing Director of MMTL said the bus conductors must work as a team to redress the poor image that the public have about them. He believes that the training initiative signifies a new beginning for all MMTL drivers and would contribute towards the reduction in road fatalities and damage to the company’s fleet of buses. The nationwide training programme started on Monday the September 2 and will finish in the second week of November. The NDA is hopeful the first batch of 1000 drivers would have taken the refresher course by the. The initiative is supported by the Ministry of Transport, National Roads Safety Commission (NRSC), Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and Government Technical Training Centre (GTTC). Other private companies supporting the refresher course include Good Year Tyres, Rana Motors and Vulco. The Managing Director of Good Year Tyres, Mr. Vinay Kapoor, said his company thought it appropriate to come on board because MMTL drivers form a critical part of road users. “We believe that if drivers, especially commercial drivers are frequently given refresher course like this one, it will go a long way to reduce road traffic crashes in the country”, he said. Good Year and Rana Motors provided logistic support for the programme and they have indicated that they will provide further resources to shore up other activities of the NDA.
