The management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital have confirmed to Joy News they are no longer charging the increased service fees, and have reverted to the old charges.
The hospital increased its service fees as high as 100 percent last week, but the new fees attracted avalanche of criticisms with parliament describing them as illegal. The Board Chairman of the hospital Mr Eddy Annan yesterday directed management to reverse the fees after realising it was premature.
However, checks at the hospital on Thursday morning by Joy News revealed that the hospital was not adhering to the directive.
But Acting Chief Executive Officer of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr David Nortey told Joy News the failure to carry out the directive came as a “surprise” to him because heads of department were yesterday asked to stop charging the new fees immediately.
He acknowledged that management “have accepted that they were a bit in a haste” in increasing the fees, adding they “erred in genuine lack of appreciation of 21 sitting day of parliament” for the new charges to take effect.
He assured that the hospital, as at Thursday evening, has done all it needs to do to have all processes reversed. He stated that a team of IT personnel in collaboration with HFC are “working assiduously to get things resolved”. They are expected to come out with the difference to be refunded to patients who were “trapped” by the system, he said.
Dr Nortey said he is expecting a report from the team by tomorrow. He has therefore asked persons affected by the new system to “keep their receipts very well” to qualify them for a refund, which he said would be done “as soon as practicable”.
The onus would however be on those who have misplaced their receipts to prove that they paid the unapproved fees, he maintained.
Dr Nortey said even though they “may feel embarrassed” by the turn of event, they are “emboldened” by the numerous supports leading to the rectification of the system.
Taking solace in the fact that no human or system is perfect, he described the whole fiasco as “one kind of incident which has been an eye opener and a learning opportunity” for management.
