The Ghana Aids Commission is on a fund-raising drive to keep its five-year development plan alive as major donors withdraw financial support.
Government budgetary allocation to the Commission has also been delayed.
Major donors like the Global Fund and the UK Department of International Development have withdrawn their support to the Ghana Aids Commission without reasons.
The Ghana Aids Commission fears this could impact negatively on plans to reduce new infection by half in its 5 year strategic plan.
Director in Charge of Policy and Planning at the Commission Dr. Joseph Amuzu tells Parliament's Public Accounts Committee that government’s promise to support activities of the Aids Commission with 150 million Ghana cedis has been slow in coming.
But one of the Ghana Aids Commission ambassadors championing its hearts-to-hearts campaign Reverend John Azumah tells Joy News the withdrawal of the support by the Global Fund will be disastrous for Ghana.
He said about 70 per cent of anti-retroviral drugs they use are funded by Global Fund. He predicted that thousands of aids patients would definitely be affected.
“It’s going to affect the economy, it is going to affect the work of the Aids Commission, and it’s really going to create more room for infections,” he said, adding that when awareness campaign is affected, “people will have sex without using condom, people will still be stigmatised.”
Rev. Azumah appealed to the government to intervene to ensure that aids campaigns are not disrupted so that set targets are achieved.
