Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba, Prof. Emmanuel Nicholas Abakah, is calling on the government to rescind the decision of abolishing allowances paid teacher trainees in the country.
The Ministry of Education is abolition the 3-year allowance paid to trainee teachers in Colleges of Education.
Prof. Abakah however describes the government’s decision as a “monumental tragedy”.
According to him, the move will discourage many people from poor background, but interested in teaching, to enroll in teaching education institutions.
The Professor of Languages is also not happy with the government’s inability to motivate teachers in the rural communities.
He suggests special allowances, accommodation and transport assistance for teachers who take up appointments in rural areas.
Prof. Abakah spoke to Luv News at the maiden graduation of the Jackson Educational College in Kumasi. The school graduated 178 students who passed out of the school’s 3-year Diploma Programme in Basic Education.
Principal of the College, Theodosia Jackson, says the College is setting the pace in running distance education programme in Ghana.
The College has established 31 learning centre s across the ten regions of Ghana.
