Africa: Ghana ranked 7th best in governance

Ghana has been ranked as the 7th best performing country in good governance, out of 52 nations on the continent. That’s according to the latest Mo Ibrahim index report.

The country was assessed in the areas of safety and rule of law, human rights, sustainable economic opportunity and human development.

Ghana, according to the report, is one of eight countries to have been consistent in their performance, since 2000.

The rest are Mauritius, Botswana, Cape Verde, South Africa, Namibia, Seychelles and Tunisia.

The report says the country has shown significant improvement in the category of human development - that is welfare, education and health.

Ghanaians are part of 94 per cent of Africans who continue to experienced good governance, which has been rising steadily since 2000.

A breakdown of the report shows that Ghana scored 81 per cent in the rule of law, more than 80 per cent in national security, and 71 per cent in education.

Despite challenges in individual African countries, the report says good governance continues to thrive.

Perhaps the only fallout from the report is that no past leader was found qualified enough to win the top prize for the leadership category.
