Most ministries and government agencies are yet to be migrated onto the prepaid metering system several months after President Mahama issued the directive.
The decision by the Ministry of Energy to migrate Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies onto the prepaid metering system is intended to limit abuse and avoid wastage in the system.
Hopefully, the decision will reduce MMDAs huge indebtedness to the Electricity Company of Ghana.
Only yesterday, Thursday, October 17, 2013 the President issued another directive for prepaid meters to be installed in the homes of ministers and presidential staffers.
Meanwhile, Joy News checks at some ministries revealed that most of the ministries are yet to be captured onto the prepaid system.
At the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, the Public Relations Officer there Abraham Otabil says the ministry was notified about the migration by the ECG, but that is yet to be implemented.
An official at the Communications Ministry also tells Joy News the ministry is yet to be captured.
Although the Trade Ministry annex block has been migrated onto the prepaid system, an official there who prefers to remain anonymous tells Joy News it is expensive to run government business on the new system.
“They have to put industry meters here because you can’t put meters on each floor, in all we have over 100 air conditioners as well as fridges and computers. We have about 58 offices; if you put one meter on each floor how much can you buy within a week to do government work.”
