A former Deputy Power Minister has called on the government to “as a matter of urgency” terminate the Concession Agreement between the Electricity Company of Ghana and Power Distribution Service (PDS).
John Abdulai Jinapor’s call follows the government’s suspension of the agreement which mandated PDS to take over some assets and operations of the ECG including electricity service distribution, in all of ECG’s operational areas in Ghana.
Announcing the decision on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday night, Information Minister, Kojo Opong Nkrumah, said the decision was reached after painstaking investigations.
A statement which followed from his office said in part “the decision follows the detection of fundamental and material breaches of PDS obligations in the provision of payment securities (Demand Guarantees) for the transactions which has been discovered upon further due diligence.”
John Abdulai Jinapor, who is also a Member of Parliament for Yapei/Kusawgu constituency at a press briefing Thursday, expressed dissatisfaction at the steps taken by the government to address the impasse.
He wants the government to go further to “identify and prosecute those responsible for the fraudulent guarantee as confirmed by the Minister of Energy.”
In addition, the government must “ensure a full refund of all monies appropriated by PDS through this fraudulent scheme,” including “dissolving the current ECG Board and appoint a competent non-partisan board.”
