The Presidential taskforce that uncovered the rot of tax evasion at government bonded warehouses, according to Presidential Staffer, Dr. Clement Apaak, is not obliged to make known its intelligence to the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
His statement is in reaction to comments by the GRA that 71.14 million Ghana cedis had been unaccounted for, and not the reported 700 million Ghana cedis . Subsequently it asked the task force to share its information.
But Dr. Apaak said the 700 million Ghana cedis is only a tip of the iceberg and though the taskforce was not obliged to share its intelligence, it will take the appropriate steps at the right time. He added they (GRA) may not be privy to the operations of the taskforce because it worked independently and took stock of events from 2005 to 2012.
However on JoyNews' NewsDesk on MultiTv, Public Relations Officer of the Division, Robert Mensah admitted that prior to the press conference that denied the loss of 700 million Ghana cedis to the state, they had no idea the report covered a time span 6 years.
He disclosed the division's audit covered June to date. Robert Mensah was nonetheless quick to add the amount announced by the division covered only a portion of the over one hundred bonded warehouses in Accra.
Presidential staffer, Dr.Apaak commenting on the progress of the investigation said already 10 defaulting companies have made attempts to right their wrong. He cautioned any company that will call their bluff will be made to face the full rigors of the law.
