The out-going Municipal Chief Executive of Adentan, Kakra Van Lare, says she cannot trust the Police there to properly investigate an assassination attempt on her.
According to the Ms. Van Lare, six Assembly members in the district attempted to assassinate her by loosening the bolts and nuts on her official vehicle. She said the intention of her accusers was to tamper with the car and compromise her safety but they were caught in the act by her driver.
She accused the Adentan District Police of failing to competently investigate the case and bring the perpetrators to book when she reported the matter to them.
The out-going MCE said she felt she wasn't safe after the incident and that the conduct of the police didn't give any assurance.
"I have transferred the case from Adenta Police station to the Regional police station because this is an attempt on my life and the district commander, for me, did not handle the issue well so I do not have confidence in the Adenta [police]. That is why I decided to transfer the case to the Central police station in Greater Accra for them to take a look at it", she stated.
Last Thursday, some six assembly members embarked on a demonstration to protest Ms. Van Lare's continuous stay in office after she failed to secure approval from the assembly as required by law. But the emabtled outgoing MCE told JOYNEWS she will only vacate her post if authorised to do so by the President.
"I am Chief Executive in Adentan, when these young men, eleven of them decided to vote against me. I couldn't make the 50%. I have no problem with that. It is legal. I mean, they have their legal rights. But I believe that I was brought into office by an appointment letter and I also want to believe that the President would have to revoke your appointment with a letter authorizing you to hand over to the minister. I have not had any such letter. So, I want to believe that until then, I should remain there and do the administrative aspects of the work", she stressed.
Explaining the assassination attempt on her, Ms. Van Lare told JoyNews' Michaella Anderson, she was about to leave the office after close of work, one Thursday, when the security man told her that he was suspicious about the movements of some Assembly members downstairs.
According to her, she decided to call the Adenta District Police Commander for police protection and a police officer was sent to escort her home. She said just when she escorted down stairs by a policeman, one of six assembly members lunged forward to hit her but was held at bay by the policeman.
When the attacker was interrogated by the policeman, he said he wanted to inquire from the MCE, when their sitting allowances would be paid, Madame Van Lare narrated.
"The policeman asked me to enter the car and as we were about to enter the car, the driver told me that he can't move the car because they have removed the bolts on the car. We went round and took a look and true too, they had taken the bolts of the vehicle, making it impossible for me to move. So the police asked Tony Blair [Assembly Member for New Legon], who had boldly come out to say he was the leader and he accepted that they the six assembly members took the bolt", She recounted.
The assembly members ignored all pleas to them to return the bolts, the Out-going MCE noted, adding; "so I ordered for their arrest and we all ended up at the police station".
Ms. Van Lare further revealed that when the six assembly members were asked at the police station about the missing bolts, they confirmed that they were in their posession and subsequently produced them on the instructions of the Adenta District Commander, DSP Stephen Ahiatafu.
The District Police Commander, therefore, refused to comment on the issue, when contacted.
Sergeant Kwame Danso, who is with the Accra Regional Police Public Affairs told Joy News that fresh investigations into the case had begun.
According to him, the docket on the case had been transferred from the Adentan District Police station to the regional police office.
"Now that we have taken delivery of the docket, we are going to begin fresh investigations then people who will be find liable as far as offences are concerned, will be put before the court," he added.
Meanwhile, President John Mahama has nominated the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Greater Accra regional Vice Chairperson, Gifty Emefa Nartey, as the new MCE for Adentan.
