By 2016, every household in Wa is expected to be served with portable water. President Mahama, as part of his working visit to the Upper West Region today, cut a sod for work to begin on a water supply project for Wa.
This is expected to end residents’ dependence on the existing water supply through boreholes. The current water supply system provides a little over 300 thousand gallons of water daily instead of the two million gallons needed. President Mahama is upbeat about the project.
"On 7th December, we signed the contract for the start of the project and today we are here for the sod cutting ceremony", he intimated.
According to President Mahama, an ongoing World Bank facility of $5.8 million that is being used in improving the supply of water to Wa and its environs, will see an increase to the ground water supply system to about 700,000 gallons of water a day.
"The [World Bank Project] should alleviate the water situation in Wa until this project that we are currently working on comes on screen. The current project financed by the Korean government is going to supply 3.3 million gallons of water a day to Wa and surrounding communities", the President indicated.
This, he noted will be "far in excess of the demand of Wa and so this project combined with the World Bank's project are sufficient to meet Wa's demand from now till 2025.”
President Mahama therefore, appealed to consumers to pay water tariffs to ensure constant supply, while government and the Ghana Water Company seek to provide water to all Ghanaians.
President Mahama also inspected a 160 capacity regional hospital, which is supposed to be ready by the end of next year. He also paid a courtesy call on the Wa-Naa.
