The National Aids Control Programme has begun rationing anti-retroviral drugs to people living with HIV and AIDS due of financial constraints.

Manager of the Aids Control Programme, Dr. Nii Akwei Addo, has warned that if urgent are not taken to bridge the funding gap, Ghana will completely run out of anti-retroviral drugs.

He told Joy News the financial difficulties his outfit is going through has made it impossible for the Programme to buy and distribute adequate amounts of the drugs.

“Break in medication may lead to emergence of resistant strains to the current medicines that we have and the nobody wants that”, he added.

The state pledged an annual support of GHC 150 million to the Ghana Aids Commission following the withdrawal of financial support by the Global Fund when the country attained middle income status.

However, government has reneged on this promise.

Dr. NuamahTwum, NPP MP for Berekum East, who first raised the issue on the floor of Parliament told Parliamentary Correspondent Elton John Brobbey that gains made in curbing the disease may be eroded if nothing is done immediately.

Current HIV infection estimates show as at 2012, about 235,982 people, comprising 101, 759 males and 134,223 females, are living with HIV in Ghana,

Also 27, 734 children are living with HIV in the country.

The National Aids Control Programme is responsible for the prevention and control of HIV transmission.
