Farmers and fishermen in the country have been asked to reunite and rise as one body in order to enjoy the numerous benefits associated with their noble profession- agriculture.

The call was made during an inaugural meeting of the Upper West Regional wing of the Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF).

 Addressing the gathering, Chairman of the sub-committee of the Ghana National Association of Farmers And Fishermen (GNAFF),  Emmanuel T Mensah called on farmers in the region to fully unite and present a stronger voice.

Mr. Mensah said they have decided to revive the association again following a meeting in April with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA).
 

He said the major challenge with farmers is the lack of unity. ‘‘Without unity there is no strength and all farmers in Ghana must unite. The reason is that without unity we cannot do anything.

"GNAFF is for all farmers in Ghana and it is time for us to unite with one vision and purpose," he posited.

Mr Mensah also revealed that there are about 3,600 Farmer-Base Organisations in the country whose interests must be united for the development of the agricultural industry.

In his opening speech, Northern Sector Organiser for GNAFF, Mr Mohammed Obey said the exercise  is to sensitise farmers on the need to join the umbrella body which will cater for all their essential needs.

He added that GNAFF will be done in collaboration with MEC-ELLIS INVESTMENTS, a non-governmental organization who will administer the GNAFF welfare scheme and other welfare programs for members.
 

The association which has existed since February 1992, has been defunct for many years.

The meeting was called to resuscitate the group with five representatives each from the districts in the region also witnessing the swearing-in of the Upper West Regional Wing of the GNAFF.

The group will monitor and coordinate affairs of the association at the regional level.
 

Newly elected chairman of the Upper West Wing, Mr. Bofreno Bayor who spoke on behalf of the regional wing said they were ready to accept new challenge and work together in unity to revive GNAFF.
