Over fifty workers at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) would have to take an early Christmas break after fire razed down their offices Thursday dawn.

Deputy CHRAJ Commissioner, Joseph Whittal told Joy News what used to be the support unit, accounts unit and the anti-corruption department of CHRAJ have now been reduced to ashes.

Around 3:30 am, Thursday dawn, a thick smoke was said to have emanated from one of the offices of the former Parliament House, which now served as offices of CHRAJ and only recently, venue for the hearing of the Judgment Debt Commission.

The thick smoke gave way to a marauding fire, which in few minutes consumed files and other key logistics in the offices of CHRAJ and the Judgment Debt Commission, Myjoyonline.com's Edwin Appiah reported.

Fire Service personnel were on hand few minutes after a call was made to them but it took hours for the inferno to be put out completely.

Barely anything useful could be salvaged in the affected areas, Appiah reported.

Lawyer for the Judgment Debt Commission, Dometi Kofi Sokpor said even though the fire is regrettable, it would not affect the activities of the Commission.

According to him, there is a back-up for all the files and documents consumed by the fire.

But CHRAJ appears to have been hit severely by the fire.

Deputy Commissioner, Whittal told Joy News they will now have to look for temporary offices for some 50 workers, whose offices have been burnt down.

He noted that files on on-going investigations would be difficult to retrieve, even though they have back-ups for old cases, adding that the main office of CHRAJ is however, intact.
