Ranking member on the Committee on Government Assurances, Joe Badu Ansah says the committee is poised to ensure that ministers appointed by government achieve the targets set in the 2014 budget.

According to the Ranking member, it is a duty placed on the committee to make sure that Ghanaians are not taken for granted in terms of promises made in the budget.

"We have the mechanisms to do that. We were voted to tell the people of Ghana what the government has promised and what [it has] done", Joe Badu Ansah insisted, when he spoke to Joy News, Thursday on the issue of Parliament's  determination of sanctioning ministers who fail to achieve the targets set in the 2014 budget.

He hinted Parliament will recommend to the Executive to suspend poor performing ministers but was quick to add that the ultimate decision will be for the President to make.

"If we don't do it, we will lose the trust and respect from the people of Ghana", the Ranking member stressed, adding that the committee will go ahead to examine the ministers and recommend appropriate sanctions. for non-performing ones.

The ranking member was confident that the committee has the capacity to do its work, despite challenges with finances.

Parliament yesterday passed the appropriation Act authorizing government to spend budgeted estimates of over 35 billion cedis next year.

But the approval came with a warning to ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) that Parliament will no longer tolerate overspending.

At the end of 2012, government recorded a deficit of nearly 12%, missing its target to reduce it to 9% and to 6% over the medium-term. This was largely blamed on overspending by government.
