The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital lost 485 thousand Ghana Cedis in National Health Insurance Revenue following about three-month strike by pharmacists earlier in the year.

Chief Executive, Professor Ohene Adjei, said claims on drugs supplied to patients dropped from an average of 500 thousand Ghana Cedis a month to about 15 thousand Ghana cedis during the period.

"Strike by the Pharmacists and the doctors dealt a crippling blow to the finances of the hospital thus severely undermining the hospitality abilities to meet its obligations to suppliers and others," the CEO said in an interaction with workers.

"Even more critical was the irreversible adverse effect of the prolong strikes on the patients safety and lives, he added.

He said for a hospital that depends largely on internally generated funds to survive, the financial losses as a result of the strikes are unacceptable.

He therefore appealed to organized labour to explore dialogue in seeking redress to their grievances instead of resorting to strikes which have serious financial implication on the institutions.

Professor Ohene Adjei says staff must be considerate in their demands and also embrace certain measures put in place to improve internally- generated funds.

He said this is even more critical as there are calls to wean public institutions off state funding.
