The Ghana Registered Nurses Association (GRNA) has warned they would kick against any plan to scrap allowances of trainee nurses.

Their warning follow media reports that government would from 2014, scrap the allowances as it did with the teacher trainees'.

Vice President of the Association Kwame Adinkra Amo told Joy News though the Association has not yet received an official notification on the decision, their sources within government have confirmed it.

Clinical Pathologist, Professor Agyeman Badu Akosah, has backed moves by government to scrap the payment of nurses trainee allowance.

Mr Akosah has suggested that the trainee nurses be introduced to the students loan scheme.

The Clinical Pathologist was contributing to discussions on the 2014 budget statement of the government for the health sector earlier this month.

He explained that funds for payment of these allowances for trainee nurses could be channelled into expanding the nursing institutions to allow more intake of students.

Mr. Adinkra Amo on the other hand says the decision would adversely affect the health sector.

He explained the allowances serve as binding contracts to the trainees to offer services to the county after their training, warning only few people would be able to train as nurses if the decision is implemented.
