The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has announced it will soon embark on 24 hours surveillance in markets across the country.
This is to enable the service closely monitor activities of market men and women to avert any fire outbreaks this year.
Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Prince Billy Anaglatey disclosed this to CitiNews Monday.
The country was plagued with series of market fires last year. Key amongst them was the fire outbreak at Kantamanto, a popular market at the central business district of Accra on May 5, 2013 which destroyed properties worth millions.
To nip such unfortunate incident in the bud in 2014, Mr. Anaglatey said Fire Service personnel will be stationed at various markets to prevent any possible disaster.
According to him, the fire personnel as part of their work will educate trades about the causes of fires and the dangers of using substandard electrical gadgets in the market.
“Personnel of the Fire Service will patrol markets 24 hours and assist the market men and women with the expertise on how to use electrical gadgets,” he added.
Prince Billy Anaglatey believes these measures by the GNFS will reduce the spate of fire outbreaks in markets to the barest minimum.
