President John Mahama rescued the nation from a potential tribal implosion, Information and Media Relations Minister, Mahama Ayariga has revealed.
According to him, but for the wisdom of the president who shuffled Regional Ministers, a possible ethnic confrontations emanating from the appointment of Ministers to head some regions would have been inevitable.
"This country was gradually moving to a certain level of regionalism and ethnicity...You go to a region and the people feel that the minister must come from the region and [even] within the region some part of the region must produce the minister and another must produce the DCE [District Chief Executive]".
Speaking on the Super Morning Show on Joy FM, Tuesday, Mr. Ayariga said president Mahama was however quick to nip that in the bud, by creatively shuffling regional ministers soon after they were sworn into office.
For instance Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo originally appointed as Greater Accra Regional Minister was moved to the Volta Region, while Julius Debrah, who was then heading the Eastern Region was moved to Accra. Helen Ntoso was moved from Volta to Eastern as was Samuel Sarpong who moved from Ashanti to the Central region.
"The message was that we are one people and any person from any place can go to anywhere," Mr. Ayariga emphasised.
He adds that the president did an "excellent job" in ensuring that his appointments were made based on a fair regional balance, which is "unprecedented"
This government has the highest representation of women occupying high positions as well as having the highest representation of young people in key positions, he said.
