The 41 year old BBC journalist, Komla Dumor passed on yesterday, January 19, at his home in London and tributes continue to pour in from around the world for the man, who played as the Boss Player on JOY Fm’s super morning show.
The presenter of the BBC’s Focus on Africa television programme died leaving behind three children and a wife.
Family, former colleagues and friends are still struggling to come to terms with his death.
Chief Executive Officer of accounting firm, Trust Consult, Charles Mensah, and a close friend of Komla Dumor, recounts some of the fond memories.
“Komla and I share a lot of things professionally. Even when he is going on air at BBC, he will send me a test. We share a number of things; even cloths, the designs, the style , the handkerchief and the [Neck] tie…even the glass I am wearing right now, he got them for me. When I travel to abroad, we go to the same shop, eatery joint, we will talk and talk. This gentleman is passionate about everything he does”, Mr. Mensah noted.
Subsequently, a book of condolence has been opened at JOY FM for Komla Dumor and former JOY FM colleagues have been paying tributes.
Recounting their first encounter back at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Mawuko Zormelo noted “recalling when I first got to know him [1995-1996], when we met at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation. Komla had this deep appreciation of issues”.
“Initially, when I was doing the Super Morning Show on Joy and Komla was doing the Mobitel Traffic Watch, I asked him one morning if he would want to be a presenter, because I was intrigued by his voice.
“He said ‘no, no…that was way too big for me…I have other plans’. But i cornered him on the end and I said Komla, you are going to be a broadcaster, whether you like it or not. I spoke with Kwasi Twum and Kwasi thought it was a brilliant idea and so was how it all began.
“When I started teaching him how to use the console, how to play music…the ethics of broadcasting, he became very interested…” former morning show host, Tommy Annan Forson recalled.
