Parliamentary Select Committee on Roads and Transport will on Tuesday, February 4, consider a petition by students of the University of Ghana regarding the introduction of tolls on the university roads.

Vice Chairman of the committee, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie disclosed this in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday.

The Students Representative Council (SRC) petitioned Parliament to scrap charges for students, who use cars on the university's roads and further reduce the amount charged other motorists.

The University of Ghana on Saturday February 1, 2014 commenced the controversial road toll system that will see motorists pay between GH¢1 to GH¢ 3 for using the university’s routes.

But the SRC contends that, the decision endorsed by the Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhaji Amin Sulemani, is a deliberate attempt by the university authorities to extort money from students.

Theophilus Tetteh Chaie on Ekosii Sen called for ceasefire adding that members of the committee will sit on the matter tomorrow.

According to him, the issues raised by the students are legitimate but they would have to meet with the Transport Minister to know the agreement reached with the university authorities.

Tetteh Chaie also the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central expressed reservations about the introduction of the tolls.
