Authorities of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital have handed over one of their cleaners to the police as they continue investigations into the disappearance of three babies declared dead by the hospital.

 The cleaner only known as Mormen claims to have burnt the body as part of his daily garbage collection but checks at the site revealed no trace of a charred body.

The search follows demands from a mother, Suwaiba Abdul Mumin, whose baby was declared dead hours after delivery.

She said even after she accepted the sad death of her baby, nurses could not hand her the body for an Islamic burial. 

"The nurses wrapped my baby and put it where they put the others. I was later told it had died. I asked to see the body and they agreed but I was not shown the body. My brothers went to claim it they could not find my own. I need the body whether in limbs or in full", she told Luv Fm’s Erastus Asare Donkor.

Public Relations Officer of the hospital Kwame Frimpong says management handed over Mormen to the police because they were not satisfied with the orderly's explanation.

He says orderlies are responsible for cleaning the wards and not conveying bodies to the mortuary or anywhere else.

An uncle of the victim, Mohammed Abdul Rahman told Joy News the family reported the theft to the police after consulting his lawyer.

A probe by the Police into the whereabouts of the body revealed the bodies of two other babies could also not be found.

Meanwhile, Public Relations Officer of the Health ministry, Anthony Goodman told Joy News they are determined to get to the bottom of all similar complaints at the hospital.

He says such occurrences undermine the Ministry's efforts to reduce maternal and child mortality and behaviourial change in hospital workers.
