The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has embarked on a nation-wide disaster management education programme to educate pupils on disaster prevention and also encourage them to grow trees. The programme, which is on the theme "Disaster risk reduction begins at school", is to sensitise the pupils on disasters and their prevention and also encourage them and their teachers to embark on afforestation programmes in their schools and the community. Mr Douglas Akrofi Asiedu, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) retired, acting National Coordinator of the NADMO, said this when he briefed newsmen on the exercise in Tamale. He said the tree growing exercise would be made competitive between the schools and the winners would be rewarded with some incentives and certificates. He said if the culture of tree growing was nurtured among the children they would grow to take it up and contribute to disaster prevention. Mr Asiedu said NADMO was in the Northern Region to distribute relief items such as used clothing and health kits valued over GH¢5,000 to some health centres and clinics, which got flooded during last years floods. He said Daboya and Walewale were the hardest hit by the floods and would be receiving a substantial quantity of the health kits and other medical supplies to enable the centre attend to sick people. He said the campaign on tree growing and the distribution of the relief items, would be extended to the Upper East and West Regions, which were also hit by the floods. Mr Aseidu appealed to traditional chiefs and the general public to assist in the tree-planting exercise to make Ghana green and save the environment.GNA
