Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital are asking for full security at their homes as part of their condition to resume work fully.
Some doctors and nurses at the hospital withdrew their services on Friday after they were attacked by a mob, mostly Muslim youth from Aboabo. The mob attack had been fuelled by suspicion that some nurses and doctors at the hospital have conspired to steal a baby.
Members of the Ashanti Regional Security Council held an emergency meeting with Zongo chiefs in the capital, Kumasi.
The meeting was intended to calm down the rising tension between some Muslim youth and staff of the hospital in order to give peace a chance.
At the meeting, the Ashanti Regional Minister Eric Opoku talked about efforts being put in place to get the doctors return to work.
Though the doctors were yet to convey a meeting to discuss the way forward, Nhyira FM’s Ohemeng Tawiah gathered that they are asking for military presence at the hospital. The presence of military as well as plain-clothed and uniformed police was conspicuous at the facility.
In addition, the doctors are demanding that they are given adequate security protection in their various homes, because they are afraid for their life. Their fear was compounded by a statement issued by the family on Tuesday.
“We hereby state categorically that we would get our baby alive or dead. If the police choose to focus on KATH to the neglect of our family, they are wrong. We shall not give up. This is just the beginning,” the statement signed by Mohammed Abdul Rahman on behalf of the Suwaiba family read in part.
The decision of the doctors has the backing of the Ghana Medical Association which believes the doctors are in an unsafe situation.
General Secretary of the Association Dr. Frank Serebour had previously told Joy News that the doctors cannot be forced to resume work until their safety is guaranteed by management and the regional security council.
Meanwhile most of the wards at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital remain empty as patients including pregnant women in critical condition are being turned away.
