Minister of State in-charge of Tertiary Education, Prof. Kwesi Yankah has given the University of Education, Winneba, thumbs up for using their Internally Generated Funds productively.
According to the minister, the university’s judicious use of their IGF to embark on massive infrastructural development is not only a bold statement the university has made but also a gesture that will go a long way in improving enrolment at the university, especially, with the 2020 admissions that would involve the first batch of the Free SHS students.
In August 2020, government expects an unusually high numbers of students to enter the country’s tertiary institutions.
But ahead of the period of the admissions, the universities are expected to be cushioned in order to meet the demands ahead.
Prof. Kwesi Yankah during a tour of the University of Education, Winneba to assess the level of preparedness towards the 2020 admissions, indicated that the country expects enrolment into public tertiary institutions to increase by 50% by the next academic year necessitating that efforts are doubled to accommodate them into the tertiary education system.
“I am really impressed with how you have used your IGF. It is indeed gratifying to note that you have thought about the situation and have decided to remedy it with the number of projects you are embarking on your campus,” he said.
The minister stated that government was confident tertiary institutions in the country will have minimum challenges admitting the first batch of the Free SHS graduates.
“Even though there are challenges, government will provide the needed resources to ensure that the tertiary institutions will not compromise on quality but improve the standards,” he assured.
Prof. Yankah asked the university to ensure that nothing poisons the academic environment by ensuring that the campus is free from disturbances that will throw all the plans made by the university out of gear.
The ongoing projects at the UEW are made up of lecture halls, halls of residence, hospital and accommodation facilities for lecturers.
